Playday fun

Take part in Playday on Wednesday 7 August – a national day highlighting the importance of play in children’s lives.

There are a number of easy ways to get involved locally, ranging from street play, to arts and crafts, and much more.

Free fun events on Wednesday 7 August

  • 10am to 1pm, at Eddington Square – bring the family for ‘pop up play’ with messy play, arts, races, gaming, crafting and more.

Please note that children must be accompanied by an adult. Email communitydevelopment@cambridge.gov.uk to find out more otherwise please just turn up at any of the events on the day.

Play Pavilion

The Fitzwilliam Museum’s free, family-friendly outdoor sensory play experience is running throughout the summer including on 7 August, between 12 noon and 3pm. Inspired by 'Paris 1924: Sport, Art and the Body', exhibition artists Play Build Play have designed a sensory athletics field of play for families to take-part in. Go along to enjoy more free fun.

Make your own fun with a borrow bag

Cambridge residents can also pick up a free ‘borrow bag’ with games and play equipment from Meadows Community Centre, Clay Farm Centre or Brown's Field Community Centre – use it to spend a day playing games with friends.

Make a future plan for safe outdoor play in your neighbourhood

Would you be interested in organising a safe, fun and exciting play session for children on a street near where you live that has been closed to traffic? As part of the national Play Streets scheme, communities around the country can now introduce temporary road closures to create safe places for children to play outside of their homes.

If you’d like to set up a one-off or regular event we can support you and answer any questions you might have – and we also have some kits to help you manage your Play Street event. You may need to apply for a road closure from the county council in advance but we can talk you through that process as well: Play streets

Photo competition

If you’re taking part in Playday, planning a Play Street event, or have already had one, why not enter the photo competition with a photo that captures the spirit of the day? Find out more: Play streets
