Exemptions for taxi drivers

Medical exemptions

Taxi drivers are required by law to assist passengers in wheelchairs. We can grant an exemption from this on medical grounds, or if a physical condition makes doing so unreasonably difficult.

Taxi drivers are also required to transport assistance dogs – we can grant an exemption from this on medical grounds.

There are no exemptions from carrying a reasonable quantity of luggage. The same goes for providing reasonable assistance with loading and unloading luggage.

Private Hire Vehicle plate exemptions

Private hire vehicle drivers must ensure their identification plates are visible at the front and rear of the vehicle. But proprietors of ‘prestige’ vehicles can ask us to waive this rule.
