Consent to display an advertisement: application checklist


You should apply for this consent when you want to display an advertisement or sign that requires planning permission.

Many advertisements and signs do not require consent from the local planning authority. The government has produced a guide to what is permitted without formal consent.

Requirements

The list below details supporting documents that you might need to submit as part of your application. Refer to each section to determine what you need to submit.

Application form

The application form is available on the Planning Portal. To access it, sign in, select ‘start new application’, then select the desired application.

When Required

Always required.

A completed form is always required (one copy of all application documents must be supplied if submitted by post).

What is Required

Please ensure that you have completed every section of the application form before submitting. Where sections or questions are not relevant please state this on the form.

Fee

When Required

This is always required, unless covered by an exemption.

Common exemptions

  • is for alterations, extensions etc. to a dwelling house for the benefit of a registered disabled person (please provide evidence from the DWP that the applicant is registered as being disabled)
  • is the first revision of an application for development of the same character or description on the same site by the same applicant within 12 months of making the earlier application if withdrawn or the date of decision if granted or refused and NOT a duplicate application made by the same applicant within 28 days.

Location plan

When required

Always required.

What is required

A plan which identifies the land to which the application relates. This should be:

  • drawn to an identified scale
  • identify the proposed position of the advertisement
  • show the direction of north
  • include a scale bar

Site plan

When required

Always required.

What is required

Site plan (at a scale of 1:200 or 1:500 and with a scale bar) identifying the proposed position of the advertisement in red and showing the direction of north.

Existing elevations

When required

Always required.

What is required

Detailed drawings showing the existing elevations (the appearance of the property from all sides affected by the proposal) to an appropriate scale, usually 1:100 and with a scale bar or metric measurements included.

Drawings must show the complete building, partial drawings are not acceptable.

Please ensure that all plans submitted as part of your application are accurately labelled and numbered.

Alternatively: Photographs of all existing elevation affected can be submitted instead of elevation drawings.

Proposed elevations

Always required.

What is required

Detailed drawings showing the proposed elevations (the appearance of the property from all sides affected by the proposal) to an appropriate scale, usually 1:100 and with a scale bar or metric measurements included.

What is required

Advertisement drawing(s) (e.g. at a scale of 1:50 or 1:100 with a scale bar shown) showing advertisement size, siting, materials and colours to be used, height above ground, extent of projection and details of the method and colour(s) of illumination (if applicable).
