Permitted industrial processes

The Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999 and the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010, as amended, regulate through a process of permitting industrial processes where there is the potential for significant emissions to the atmosphere (including water and land for Part A processes).

United Kingdom and European Union law defines the processes that are regulated under this legislation.

Large scale and more polluting sites known as Part A1 processes, such as Addenbrooke’s Clinical Waste Incinerator, are regulated by the Environment Agency, and Part A2 and Part B processes, which are less environmentally significant, are regulated by local authorities.

Further information and specific guidance on processes, including fees and charges, can be found on the Defra website.

The Environment Agency and Cambridge City Council hold a public register for processes they permit. Processes permitted by the Environment Agency can be found on the Defra website.

Cambridge city currently permits processes including cement batchers; waste oil burners; petrol stations; dry cleaners; vehicle resprayers, and an aircraft resprayer.

Copies of permit documents for all sites can be viewed at the council offices during normal office hours.
