You can apply and pay to change your vehicle registration number on an existing taxi vehicle licence on our licensing portal.
Read our taxi licensing fees page to check the costs associated with your application.
Application process
There are no exemptions to bypass any steps of the process. We will send you emails through the portal if we need any further information from you.
We will issue your licence and plates when:
- you have completed all steps of the application process
- you have paid all associated fees
- we have assessed and approved your application
- you have provided all documents required
We will issue the vehicle licence and plates to one of the proprietors at a plate collection appointment in person.
Step 1: Submit your application
You will need information from the following documents to complete your application:
- DVLA confirmation that the vehicle registration has been purchased (certificate of entitlement)
You must also upload copies of these documents with your application.
When we have processed your application, we will contact you within seven days to arrange an appointment.
You need an account to use the portal – you must register if you do not have one. Read our licensing portal guidance to learn how to use the portal, and contact us if you have any problems using it
Step 2: Collect your vehicle licence
You must collect your new licence in person. We will contact you via the online portal to arrange an appointment.
You must bring the following to the appointment:
- confirmation from DVLA that the registration has been assigned to the vehicle – this must be completed on the day of the appointment
- a copy of a valid insurance certificate for the appropriate use and showing the new registration
- proof of your identification – either your driver’s licence, DDL badge or passport
- your current vehicle plates
- photo ID – your DVLA licence, DDL badge or passport
If you do not provide any of these, we cannot give you your new licence and plates.
